All AIM students participate in various academic programs during the summer, including the following:
AIM Summer School
All AIM students attend summer school for three weeks from June to July. This extended school year provides each student with a better chance for academic success. Students participate in reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, science, social science, business, and humanities courses.
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY)
AIM schools believe strongly that the focus of the summer program at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth (CTY) meshes perfectly with the AIM’s own philosophy: rigorous academics. In order to gain admission to the program, students must take the SAT beginning in the 7th grade and score high enough to meet CTY's challenging standards. This year, 44 students from AIPCS (23%) qualified for the program, more students than from the rest of Oakland combined. This percentage represents the highest participation rate of any school in the United States.
Stanford Academic Institue of Learning (SAIL)
The Stanford Academic Institute of Learning (SAIL) is a three-week long (July - August) accelerated, academic program. AIM middle and high school students spend three weeks on a college campus enhancing their mathematics and physical fitness skills. In 2009, 98% of the 8th grade students who completed the SAIL algebra courses scored advanced on the California Standards Test and 2% scored proficient. Students must complete a physical education course, in which they train for the national physical fitness test, which includes the shuttle-run, v-sits, sit-ups, and the mile run. AIM schools have the highest percentage of students in the United States attending SAIL.
University of California Berkeley's Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP)
Students in this rigorous program are able to experience the challenges of college academia while forming bonds with a diverse group of professors, mentors, and other students. In order to gain admission to the program, students must demonstrate high academic achievement and meet ATDP's high standards. AIM schools have the highest percentage of students attending the ATDP program than any school system in the United States.
Merritt Community College
During the school year, all AIPHS students (9th-12th grade) participate in Merritt College courses. Over the summer, 11th and 12th grade students enroll in biology, government, and macro-economics at Merritt. Students earn credit for these courses that is transferable to any University of California system or California State University system.
